CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 2, 2017—In 1952, Billy Graham stood on the steps of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., and called on the United States Senate and Congress to request that the president enact a national day of prayer. This Thursday, May 4, the Billy Graham Library honors that tradition—65 years after President Truman signed the National Day of Prayer into law.
As chairperson of the National Day of Prayer, Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of Billy and Ruth Graham, shared these sentiments: “If ever we needed to pray for our nation, it’s now. Our nation needs healing. God promises to do so, but on the condition that we pray humbly seeking His face and turn from our own sins. Will America be healed? We won’t know until we join together and pray.”
The Billy Graham Library and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association are committed to praying for our nation. The Billy Graham Library invites guests to join in a short prayer service from 7:30-7:45 a.m., and 12-12:15 p.m. on May 4. Each observance will be led by chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team.
In 2016, Franklin Graham led the Decision America Tour to all 50 state capitals encouraging Christians to pray for America. Graham, who serves as president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, will continue to share the Gospel and encourage believers to pray for our country as he takes the Decision America Tour to Tennessee later this month. “Our country is still in trouble and needs prayer more than ever,” said Graham. “Christians are the key to this spiritual transformation in America.” Tennessee prayer rallies are scheduled May 15 in Chattanooga, May 18 in Clarksville, May 19 in Jackson, and May 21 in Memphis.
